Creating a Retro-reimagined NeXT LCD Display

The donor display for my retro-reimagined NeXT LCD display is a Sun LCD’s Model 365-1432-01 or 365-1432-01 from the 2000’s era.

Using the old Sun LCD on a restored NeXTstation Color didn’t really feel like it gave justice to how much fun the NeXTstation is to use.  So, I got an idea.  I had several of the Sun LCD Monitors mentioned above.  What if I did a retro-recreation of what a NeXT LCD might have been like?

I take defacing old gear seriously as there is only a limited supply left, but these Sun Monitors are a dime a dozen out there and top out at 1280x1024, so they don’t really have much intrinsic value.  In other words, there is a lot of them, they aren’t that special, let’s hack one!

Not sure how this was going to work, I disassembled the monitor collecting all the plastic parts.  Using Rust-oleum “self etching primer” and Rust-oleum “Satin Black” from the hardware store, I gave it a shot.  Once completed, I decided to dull the sheen a bit more with Testor’s Dull coat, and it turned out perfect!  But it was missing the NeXT logo to really sell the recreation.

It so happened I had a broken and cosmetically destroyed mouse from the group of things I had to buy to get the NeXT Soundbox.  The mouse was trashed but the logo was perfect.  I removed the logo from the mouse and placed it on the monitor stand, and, viola, a retro-recreation of a NeXT LCD display that never existed.
